FIAR-Madeline

I signed up a few months ago to do an activity and file folder Five In A Row Swap. As with most swaps, they always sound great, but I always wait until the last minute to complete 10 bags.

I chose the book Madeline, by Ludwig Bemelmams.
Below are the activities that I made for our swap.  I know it will be a big help receiving nine other book activities to use during the year.

Snowflake Bentley and Snowflake Fun

We are in the process of making snowflake crystals.
We used 2 chopsticks, 5 pipe cleaners cut in half to twist into snowflakes, 2 glasses, boiling water, food coloring, and enough borax to saturate the water. Leave your pipe cleaner snowflakes in the water for about 20 hours. To see how pretty these snowflakes get, go to Tired, Need Sleep.  We'll be posting ours this weekend.
Today we read Snowflake Bentley, by Jacqueline Martin with excitement, due to all the snow our family received up North.
We used this magnifying snowflake activity from My Montessori Journey .
We finally learned how to make pretty snowflakes from this post found here.  I cut them out of coffee filters and then we used watercolors to decorate. Here is a special little craft Olive made for me today after we read the book.

Math: We learned that the snow belt receives about 120 inches of snow a year. We estimated how much that would be and then measured it out.

We don't have any snow here, but if you are enjoying a snow day, we are thinking of you, and please make a snow angel for us!

Katy No-Pocket- Before Five In A Row

Katy No-Pocket is an adorable story about a mama kangaroo who is in need of a pocket to carry her baby. This book is illustrated by H.A. Rey, who is famous for Curious George, and written by Emmy Payne.
We worked on letter K and added picture of like kite, kangaroo, and kettle to the K pocket.
A cute little finger play.
We matched animals with their homes.
We learned about animal families. A female Kangaroo is a boomer, a male- flyer, and a baby- joey.
What lives in a tree? We also used aprons to carry our baby animals around the house.
You can find cute lapbook ideas for Katy No-Pocket at homeschool share and Christian homeschool hub.

Little Nino's Pizzeria- FIAR

Our Five in a Row Co-op had a fun time today reading Little Nino's Pizzeria, by Karen Barbour. We talked about having a servant's heart, how bigger isn't always better, and how we can help others. Instead of making lapbooks, we made folder menus for our pizzeria story.
We made homemade pizza, along with some pizza topping math, learned words in Italian, and made a Matisse type drawing for the back of our menu. I printed some cards on what you can add to a pizza to play a memory match game and we learned about homonyms- words that sound alike, but are different.

You can find a variety of ideas for Five In a Row books at homeschool share - this site is really a great resource.

FIAR-The Duchess Bakes A Cake

The Duchess Bakes A Cake by Virginia Kahl is a funny, creative and rhythmical book that we read with our Five in A Row Homeschool Co-op. There are a ton of activities you can do with this book. We talked about the feudal system, not a length, but based it more on kings, queens, and their helpers. The girls learned about leavens in baking and how it's important to follow a recipe. We baked a cake and learned about color mixing. They also learned about a family cote of arms and the importance of their symbols.

We read this book around Valentine's Day and made these cute little Valentine exchange boxes to complete our Co-op.

What we have rowed -FIAR

FIAR or Five In A Row is a literature based homeschool program by Jane Lambert, that we've been using for the past year.  This is how it works...you read the same book for a week and base your math, geography, science, history, and scripture off of that book. We enjoy making lapbooks to coordinate with what we are learning, plus Olive enjoys showing them off when family comes to visit.

Here are some books we have rowed with our FIAR co-op.

FIAR- Amber on the Mountain

Olive had a great time in her Five in a Row Co-op, thanks to Ms. M and her great ideas with the story Amber on the Mountain, by Robert Duncan. Olive loves the mountains so picturing herself as a girl living there was easy. We talked about how people lived with out cars and depended on horses, mountains we have hiked, and how friendships are important.

FIAR- A New Coat for Anna

Olive had a great time rowing the book, A New Coat for Anna, at her Five In A Row Co-op this week. The girls enjoyed playing a bartering game, dying cloth with strawberries and carrots, learning to weave, and making hand print sheep with cotton. The girls in the group are between the ages of 5-6, but this would also be a great book to revisit when they get older.
