Sensory Play With Colored Rice

This is the first time I have made colored rice and orzo, but it was super easy and the girls can't wait to get their hands on it.
Making colored rice or orzo:
- add 3 drops of food coloring to rice.
- add a few drops of rubbing alcohol to rice.
- mix well in a plastic bag.
- allow to dry for a few hours before you store or play with it.
Pink and Green Mama has some fun ideas with rainbow rice here.

  1. I'm so glad to see this post! I have been wanting to do this and had some random instructions but wasn't sure if they would work! Thank you!

  2. Wow! I love the orzo. I've done rice before, but now I'm going to experiment with other pastas. I have some tiny star shapes pastina that may work nicely.

  3. They would work well, it took a few more drops for the orzo to get started. Have fun and thanks for you comments! Karen

  4. We do this sometimes, but I add a drop of essential oils to the rice to make each color smell different. The kids love it! Then when we're done, we use little cups of the rice for air fresheners around the house.

I love your comments; they make my day, especially when you find an old sippy cup under the bed!
